At Optimist Performance, we are always looking for ways in which we can improve ourselves. What lessons we have learned and how we can use them to become the best version of ourselves and help others do the same. So, to celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we ask our Eternal Optimists for lessons, advice and ideas. Keep reading to see what they have to say.

I think one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is how important it is to have a female voice in every conversation and decision-making point, whether that is a team meeting, board level, etc… It brings richness and diversity to decision-making, to strategic choices, and understanding the value of this is crucial for business.

Also, having female role models who are walking the talk. For me, reaching out to other female leaders and having that support and encouragement have been invaluable.

What is one thing we could all do to embrace equity at work?

Be an “up-stander”, not a “bystander”. Make sure female voices are heard and listened to and that we are given a platform for this. Calling out negative behaviours and facilitating a space where everyone can do the same is great leadership.

What advice would you give to your younger, early-career self?

As a basic mantra to develop belief and confidence in trusting your inner voice if they say “no”, do it anyway. Don‘t be scared of going against the flow and being a disruptor to bring about change. Don’t be scared of using your view of the world, experiences and all the nuances that come from being a woman to support decision-making in business.

Surround yourself with great people and know who your male allies are too.

People take you as you take yourself. My favourite quote on this is actually from a man – Henry Ford “If you think you can, or you think you can’t you’re right” If you back yourself then others will too!

What is one thing we could all do to embrace equity at work?

The word EQUITY is key. Equality means giving everybody the same resources or opportunities. Equity means recognising everyone is different and giving them tailored resources and opportunities to reach equal outcomes. In my area of work – Learning and development – this means creating training and coaching programmes that meet individual needs. Forward-thinking companies know the days of cookie-cutter training are over!

What advice would you give to your younger, early-career self?

The things you perceive to be your greatest weaknesses can actually become your greatest strengths. In the face of challenge, ask yourself: “What great thing could come from this?”

Those that truly value and respect expertise, experience and skills, do so irrespective of gender (or anything else). Those that don’t … there’s no need to play the game trying to “change” them, you can smile and keep on walking.

What is one thing we could all do to embrace equity at work?

Stay present, curious and open as that promotes learning (neuroplasticity) regardless of the source.

What advice would you give to your younger, early-career self?
